Choosing the right rug size is the part most people get wrong, and it changes a room more than color or pattern. A rug that is too small makes furniture look like it is floating; the right size pulls a living room, bedroom or dining area together and makes the whole space feel bigger.

This rug size guide covers the standard rug sizes, what size rug to buy for each room, and the simple placement rules interior designers use, with measurements in both feet and centimeters.

The Golden Rule: Measure First, Then Size Up

When in doubt, go bigger. In most rooms a rug should leave about 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm) of bare floor between its edges and the walls. In smaller rooms 8 inches (20 cm) is fine. Before you order, mark the rug's outline on the floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day: it is the easiest way to see whether a size really works.

Standard Rug Sizes at a Glance

  • 2x3 rug: entryways, bathrooms, kitchen sinks and beside the bed.

  • 4x6 rug: small living rooms, under a desk or coffee table, at the foot of a bed.

  • 5x7 and 5x8 rugs: apartment living rooms, under a full or queen bed, home offices.

  • 6x9 rug: medium living rooms with the front legs of the furniture on the rug, queen bedrooms, small dining tables.

  • 8x10 and 9x12 rugs: large living rooms, open-plan spaces, king bedrooms and six-seat dining tables.

  • Runner rugs (2.5x6.5 to 3x10): hallways, kitchens and along the sides of a bed.

  • Round rugs (3 to 6.5 ft): round dining tables, entryways, reading corners and nurseries.

What Size Rug for a Living Room?

Living room rug size depends on how much of your seating you want on it. There are three layouts that always work:

  • All legs on: every piece of seating sits fully on the rug. This is the most luxurious look and needs an 8x10 or 9x12 rug in an average living room.

  • Front legs on: the front legs of the sofa and chairs rest on the rug and the back legs stay on the floor. This is the most popular layout, and a 5x8 or 6x9 rug suits most living rooms.

  • Coffee table only: a smaller 4x6 rug sits under the coffee table. Keep this for compact rooms, and make sure the rug is clearly wider than the coffee table.

Whichever you choose, the rug should be wider than your sofa, ideally by 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) on each side. That one detail makes a living room rug look intentional instead of too small.

What Size Rug for a Bedroom?

In a bedroom the rug goes under the lower two thirds of the bed, so the first thing your feet touch in the morning is soft. Leave the nightstands on the floor and let the rug extend at least 18 inches (45 cm) beyond each side of the bed.

  • Twin or full bed: a 4x6 or 5x8 rug.

  • Queen bed: a 6x9 rug, or an 8x10 if you want the rug to reach past the nightstands.

  • King bed: an 8x10 or 9x12 rug.

  • Any bed: two runner rugs, one along each side, are a smart alternative when the bed sits close to a wall or a large rug would hide a beautiful floor.

What Size Rug for a Dining Room?

A dining room rug needs to be big enough for the chairs to stay on it when they are pulled out. Measure your table and add 24 inches (60 cm) on every side. A rug that is too small catches the back legs of the chairs every time someone sits down.

  • Small four-seat table: a 6x9 rug or a 6.5 ft round rug.

  • Six-seat rectangular table: an 8x10 rug.

  • Eight-seat table: a 9x12 rug or larger.

  • Round table: a round rug with the same 24-inch rule, or a square rug if your room is square.

Low, flat rugs work best under a dining table because chairs slide easily over them. Ours are about 0.3 inches (7 mm) thick, washable, and simple to wipe after a spill.

Runner Rug Sizes for Hallways and Kitchens

Runner rugs are one of the most searched rug styles, and the right length makes a narrow space feel calm instead of cramped. Leave about 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) of floor on each side of the runner and 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 cm) at each end.

  • 2.5x6.5 runner: short hallways, in front of the kitchen sink or counter, beside the bed.

  • 2.5x10 runner: long hallways and galley kitchens.

  • 3x10 runner: wider hallways and entryways.

When to Choose a Round Rug

A round rug softens a room full of straight lines. It is the natural choice under a round dining table, in an entryway, in a reading corner with one armchair or in a nursery. As a guide, a 3 ft or 4 ft round rug suits an entry or a corner, a 5 ft round rug a small table or a bedside, and a 6.5 ft round rug a four-seat round dining table.

Small Rugs: 2x3 and 4x6

Small rugs work hardest. A 2x3 rug catches dirt at the door, and a 4x6 rug adds color in a home office or under a coffee table in a studio apartment. They are also the easiest to keep fresh: our washable rugs up to 4x6 fit most standard home washing machines.

How to Measure for a Rug

  • Measure the length and width of the room, then subtract the bare-floor border you want on each side.

  • Measure your main piece of furniture: the sofa in a living room, the bed in a bedroom, the table in a dining room.

  • Mark the rug outline with painter's tape and check that walkways and doors stay clear.

  • Check door clearance. A low rug about 0.3 inches (7 mm) thick sits under most interior doors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common living room rug size?

In the US, 5x8 and 8x10 are the most common living room rug sizes. A 6x9 rug is a good middle ground for medium rooms where the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug.

Is it better for a rug to be too big or too small?

Slightly too big is almost always better. A rug that is too small makes a room look disconnected, while a generous rug makes it feel larger and more finished.

What size rug goes under a queen bed?

A 6x9 rug works under most queen beds, placed horizontally under the lower two thirds of the bed. Choose an 8x10 if you want the rug to reach past the nightstands.

What size runner rug do I need for a hallway?

Choose a runner that leaves 4 to 6 inches of floor on each side and stops 6 to 12 inches before each end of the hallway. A 2.5x10 runner fits most long hallways.

Can I wash a large rug at home?

Our washable rugs up to 4x6 fit most standard home washers. Sizes from 5x8 up, and the 3x10 runner, need a large-capacity washer or a laundromat machine. Wash cold on a delicate cycle and lay flat to dry.
