How to wash a washable rug at home: which sizes fit your washer, the right temperature and cycle, how to dry it flat, and simple ways to remove coffee, wine and pet stains.

A washable rug is one of the easiest upgrades for a busy home. Coffee, muddy paws, a toddler's lunch: instead of calling a professional cleaner, you put the rug in the washing machine. But washable rugs last longest when they are washed the right way, and a few simple habits keep the colors fresh and the rug lying flat for years.
Here is exactly how to wash a washable rug at home, how to dry it, what to do when it is too big for your machine, and how to deal with everyday stains.
Before You Wash: Check the Rug Size and Your Washer
The most important question is whether the rug fits your machine with room to move. A rug packed too tightly into the drum won't get clean and puts strain on the washer.
Up to 4x6, including 2.5 ft wide runners: these fit most standard home washers of 3.5 cubic feet or larger.
5x7 and larger, including the 3x10 runner: these need a large-capacity washer of 4.5 cubic feet or larger, or a large laundromat machine.
Always check the care label or listing of your own rug first. The steps below follow the care instructions for our washable rugs.
How to Wash a Washable Rug in 7 Steps
Shake it out and vacuum both sides to remove loose dirt, grit and pet hair. This keeps the wash water cleaner.
Spot-treat any stains with a little mild detergent and cold water, and blot gently with a clean cloth.
Fold the rug loosely in thirds or roll it, then place it in the drum so it is evenly balanced. Wash it on its own.
Choose cold water, no warmer than 86°F (30°C), and a delicate or gentle cycle.
Use a small amount of mild liquid detergent. Never use bleach.
Take the rug out as soon as the cycle ends, so it doesn't sit wet in the drum.
Lay it flat to dry. Do not put it in the tumble dryer.

How to Dry a Washable Rug
Drying is where most washable rugs are ruined. Heat from a tumble dryer can damage the backing and make the rug lose its shape, so always air dry.
Lay the rug completely flat on a clean floor, a drying rack, or over a balcony or patio railing with plenty of support.
Choose a well-ventilated spot and turn the rug over once the top feels dry, so the backing dries too.
Make sure the rug is completely dry before you put it back on the floor, especially on wood floors.
If an edge or corner curls, smooth it flat while the rug is still slightly damp.
What If the Rug Is Too Big for Your Washer?
Large rugs like a 5x8 or 6.5x9.5 can still be machine washed, just not always at home. A laundromat with large-capacity front-loading machines is the easiest option: use the same cold, gentle settings and bring the rug home to dry flat.
Between full washes, a large rug stays fresh with regular vacuuming and quick spot cleaning, so you may only need a laundromat trip a few times a year.

Everyday Care Between Washes
Vacuum regularly. Once a week is plenty for most rooms; high-traffic areas like hallways and entryways benefit from more.
Spot clean spills right away with a damp cloth and a drop of mild detergent.
Rotate the rug every few months so sunlight and foot traffic wear it evenly.
Shake out small rugs and runners outside to remove dust and crumbs.
How to Remove Common Stains
The rule for every stain: blot, don't rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper and roughens the surface.
Coffee, tea and red wine: blot up as much as you can, dab with cold water and a little mild detergent, then blot dry. Wash the whole rug if a mark remains.
Food and grease: lift off any solids with a spoon, then treat with mild detergent and cold water.
Pet accidents: blot thoroughly, rinse the spot with cold water, and wash the rug as soon as you can.
Mud: let it dry completely, break it up gently and vacuum, then spot clean what is left.

Washable Rugs for Pets, Kids and Kitchens
Washable rugs are made for the rooms that see the most mess. A washable runner rug in the kitchen catches drips by the sink and stove; a washable area rug in the family room handles snacks, crafts and game nights; and pet owners can simply wash away muddy paw prints and accidents.
An easy-clean, washable rug is well suited to life with pets, but no rug is fully scratch-proof or stain-proof. Washing promptly after an accident gives the best result.

What Makes Our Rugs Washable
Our rugs are loom-woven on a soft cotton chenille base (75% cotton, 25% chenille) with a printed design. They are about 0.3 inches (7 mm) thick, with an overlock stitched edge and a cotton backing with a light latex anti-slip coating, so they stay in place without a separate rug pad. That low, dense construction is what lets them go through the washing machine and lie flat again afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you put a washable rug in the dryer?
We don't recommend it. Tumble drying can damage the backing and change the shape of the rug. Lay it flat to air dry instead.
How often should you wash a washable rug?
It depends on the room. Rugs in kitchens, entryways and homes with pets may need a wash every month or two; living room and bedroom rugs usually only a few times a year. Regular vacuuming and spot cleaning in between go a long way.
What temperature should I wash my rug at?
Use cold water, no warmer than 86°F (30°C), on a delicate or gentle cycle with a mild detergent and no bleach.
Can I wash a 5x8 rug at home?
Only if you have a large-capacity washer of about 4.5 cubic feet or more. Otherwise, a large front-loading machine at a laundromat works well.
Why does my new rug have creases?
Rugs are often shipped folded, so light fold lines are normal on arrival. They usually relax within 24 to 48 hours once the rug is unfolded and laid flat; reverse-rolling it or placing light weight on stubborn spots for a day can speed this up.
